I was saving this little story for whenever I got to go there and take photographs, but it hasn’t happened yet.
Earlier in the summer, I was trying to get back to a store I hadn’t been to in months. I was navigating from memory because the GPS requires more specificity than me saying, “It was a thrift store. We went there this time last year. It was over here on the west side somewhere. Don’t you remember?”
I got lost, lost in a way that I haven’t been since I first moved to this area. I realized I was going to have to pull over and get the GPS out to get myself home. I can’t leave the GPS hooked up in the car during the week because we have had theft problems in our parking lot at work. Just past a series of businesses, I pulled into the first available parking lot, straight into a space, and then began to set up the GPS.
Then I looked out the windshield and laughed. The parking lot I pulled into shared its lot with a small cemetery that I hadn’t known about before, and I was looking right into it, just on the other side of the fence. I tagged it on my GPS so that I can go back.
I may not be able to drive myself to the thrift store without getting lost, but I can find a cemetery anywhere.
