Kleinhans (2)

The one downside if visiting cemeteries outside of your home area is that locally significant names are much less likely to be familiar. Luckily, I was with my friend Gina at Forest Lawn, who pointed out this family plot and suggested that I might want to see if they were the Kleinhans who gave their name to Buffalo’s concert hall.

And they were.

According to the Kleinhans Music Hall website, the couple made their fortune from the men’s clothing store that also bore their name, and when they both died within months of one another in 1934, they left their estates to the Community Foundation of Buffalo to built a concert hall. The hall was completed in 1940. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
