Timothy Switala 2

I fell in love with this tombstone from the moment I saw it. It catches your eye – because of its very 18th century design, it stands out in the active, new section of the cemetery it sits in. The winged skull is topped with a representation of an atom. The atom, it turns out, is used as a symbol for atheists where a religious symbol would normally be – it is listed on the Veterans Affairs website as an “emblem of belief” for use on government issue tombstones for atheists.
