Oaks have been sacred and valued trees in many cultures, and so many meanings have been attached to them. An oak tree or its leaves can symbolize strength, faith, or victory, or a myriad of other related shades of meaning. The more meanings I looked for, the more I found, and I can’t really think of a way to list out all the options without simply copying dozens of websites that my readers can find for themselves. What interests me is the idea of such a fluid symbol that it ultimately could fail in the symbol’s purpose – to communicate to others who view it a particular idea. I’m not sure I know of another funerary symbol that has such a wide range of meanings and therefore isn’t readable to someone who encounters it, even steeped in the culture in which the symbol was first chosen.
