I surpised everyone who was with me, even a former sexton of the cemetery, when I flipped open the medallion on the front of this stone. I didn’t know what I would find, only that the top edge looked like a hinge and seemed worth trying.
It’s a rather ingenious design – the compartment lid is pretty to look at in and of itself, and the portrait gets protection from the wind, rain, snow, and possibly vandals. I’ve never seen anything else like it.
