I snapped this photo from a distance, seeing this marker peeking over the hill and not wanting to miss it. I was not at that time familiar with the Caledonian Society, but I have noticed the abundance of fraternal organizations represented in the cemetery. I’ve written before about tombstones and markers that denote the grave of a fraternity founder, and I’ve seen whole plots in cemeteries that were purchased by an organization for use by its members.

So from my research, it turns out that the Caledonian Society is the oldest continually existing society of its kind in the United States, founded in 1827. The modern organization strives to preserve the history and culture of the Scots, but the group was originally formed to provide support and assistance to Scottish immigrants to the United States.
