I was wondering through a newer section of Lake View Cemetery, photographing some of the exquisite monuments to be found there, including this one for the Jerebs.*
I love markers like this. Not only is it beautiful, but the few lines of roles and occupations radiate the passion of those memorialized. But…what’s that on the side of the gravestone? Kilroy?
Rest in peace, Mr. Jereb. Thank you for the smile.
*Based on a perusal of the Social Security Death Index, only Mr. Jereb appears to be deceased at the time of this blog posting.
I just discovered your nice entry concerning my parents monument. Thank you so much. They are both gone now but the genesis for Kilroy is that my dad used to doodle and draw him all the time. As I recall Kilroy was started by servicemen in the Navy but then adopted as a favored subject of graffiti by other servicemen. My dad was a D-Day veteran and my mom a homefront worker — what a great generation it was.
