I don’t have an explanation as of yet for the tombstone symbol I am about to show you. Both of these tombstones are at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, and I’ve never seen anything like them anywhere else.
It’s easier to see on the marker for Spencer Pierce, but each of these markers has an infinity symbol where one would normally expect to find a death year.
I’ve mused on a number of possibilities for this symbol. The infinity symbol is part of the Cross of St. Boniface, which looks like a Latin cross with an infinity symbol entwined around the horizontal bar that forms the arms. An infinity symbol also seems like a candidate to express a belief in eternal life of some variety. It also appears that there is a relatively recently established religion called Infinitism.
